What Inline Hockey Wheel Size Do You Need: 68mm, 72mm, 76mm & 80mm
Choosing the right wheel diameter defines your acceleration, top speed, stability and control. Here's when to use 59 mm, 68 mm, 72 mm, 76 mm and 80 mm inline hockey wheels, and how to combine them in Hi-Lo setups for Jr and Sr skaters.
Setups by skate size
In inline hockey, skates are split between Junior (Jr) and Senior (Sr), with chassis matched to each skate size. Each category uses a different Hi-Lo setup to balance control, speed and skate height.
Sizes 3.0 – 5.5
Built for young or lighter players training indoors. Better control and explosive acceleration.
Sizes 6.0 – 12.0
For adult players chasing competitive performance. Agility up front, speed and roll out back.
In Hi-Lo setups (standard on Bauer or Mission skates), the front wheels are smaller for quick direction changes, and the rear wheels are larger to boost top speed and roll.
Sizes and recommended use
Each diameter has a defined use case. These are the five standard sizes in inline hockey, with their pros, cons and ideal applications.
Goalie · lateral agility
- Quick lateral movement
- Low center of gravity
- Total control inside the crease
- No top speed
- Goalie skates only
Jr front · maximum agility
- Explosive starts
- Sharp direction changes
- Low skate profile
- Lower top speed
Jr rear · control and traction
- More traction and stability than 68 mm
- Keeps fast turning
- Natural pair to 68 mm in Jr
- Slower than 76 – 80 mm
Sr front · total balance
- Balance of acceleration and speed
- Highly versatile
- Standard in Hi-Lo Sr setups
- Not the fastest or the most agile
Sr rear · speed and roll
- Higher top speed
- More stability and longer roll
- Standard max size in Sr
- Less agile on sharp changes
- Some chassis don't fit it
Quick selection by profile
If you already know your chassis and playing style, this table sums up the most common combinations used in pro and amateur inline hockey.
| Size / Chassis | Front | Rear | Main surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jr (Hi-Lo) | 68 mm | 72 mm | Indoor · SportCourt / hardwood |
| Sr (Hi-Lo) | 76 mm | 80 mm | Indoor mixed · large rinks |
| Sr uniform | 76 mm | 76 mm | Balance · control |
| Sr speed | 80 mm | 80 mm | Long straights · smooth outdoor |
| Goalie | 59 mm | 59 mm | Goalie-specific skate |
Tips for advanced players
- Check that your chassis accepts the diameters you want. Many Sr frames are capped at 80 mm.
- Keep your bearings clean and rotate your wheels every 3 – 5 sessions to spread wear evenly.
- If you alternate indoor and outdoor, run two full sets: soft for indoor, hard for outdoor. Switching surfaces with the same wheels shortens their lifespan.
- Sizes are always read front to rear. In Hi-Lo, the first wheel is the smallest.
Picking the right wheel diameter defines how your skates feel on the rink. Jr Hi-Lo (68 / 72 mm) gives perfect height, control and acceleration for young players. Sr Hi-Lo (76 / 80 mm) combines agility up front with speed and roll at the back. Pick based on surface, size and style to get the most out of your game.
