How to choose inline hockey wheels:
Wheel Size for my Inline Skates
The wheel size must be compatible with your skate setup:
- Hi-Lo Configuration in Senior (Sr) Sizes : Sizes 6.0 to 12.0 (normally), with two 80mm wheels in the rear and two 76mm wheels in the front.
- Hi-Lo Configuration in Junior (Jr) Sizes : Sizes 3.0 to 5.5 (normally), with two 72mm wheels in the rear and two 68mm wheels in the front.
- Other Common Configurations : Some skates may have four wheels of the same size, such as four 80mm wheels or four 72mm wheels per skate. These configurations offer a different experience in terms of stability and maneuverability.
Playing surfaces for inline hockey
The playing surface determines the appropriate wheel hardness. Hardness ranges from 72A (the softest) to 85A (the hardest).
- Indoor Wheels (74A - 80A) : Perfect for plastic surfaces, wood floors, and smooth concrete. A softer wheel is ideal for providing grip on these surfaces.
Our recommendation is to use an intermediate hardness 76A (B21 and ST)
Player Weight and Wheel Hardness
The player's weight influences the choice of wheel hardness. Here are some recommendations:
- Under 68 kg : Wheels with a hardness of 72A can be opted for for greater grip.
- Over 68 kg : The choice becomes more flexible. A hardness of 76A is recommended, especially for players competing on plastic floors, as it provides an ideal balance between grip and durability.
Our B21 and ST wheels, with 76A durometer, are excellent options for indoor surfaces and fit well with a wide range of player weights.
Changing Wheels and Bearings
- Disassembly : Use an Allen wrench to unscrew the axle bolt and remove the wheel from the skate.
- Bearing Removal : Remove the bearings and spacer from each wheel. You may need to use a specific bearing wrench if they are tight.
- Installing New Wheels : Place the bearings and spacers on the new wheels, making sure they fit properly before replacing the axle and tightening.
- Axle Adjustment : The axle adjustment should be such that the wheels rotate freely without wobbling.
Maintenance of inline hockey wheels
- Regular Inspection : Check your wheels regularly for signs of wear, such as uneven edges or reduced traction.
- Wheel Rotation : Rotating your wheels helps them wear evenly, prolonging their lifespan. This involves swapping the wheels from one skate to another and turning them over so that the most worn parts change position.
- Cleaning : Keep wheels clean by using a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
- Wheel Selection : Use harder wheels for outdoor use and softer wheels for indoor use. Wheel quality also influences durability and performance.
Bearing Maintenance
- Regular Cleaning : It is important to clean bearings regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt and grease, which can reduce efficiency and increase wear.
- Necessary Tools : For cleaning, you'll need a small brush, lint-free cloths, and a specific bearing cleaning solution. Avoid using water to prevent rust.
- Lubrication : After cleaning the bearings, it is crucial to re-lubricate them with a light oil specific for bearings.
- Wear Check : If the bearings are resistant to turning or show signs of rust, they may need to be replaced.
